Customizing Your Street Sweeper – Alternative Fuel (CNG)

Almost 30 years ago now, a purpose built street sweeper that could reach speeds of 55 mph was introduced. The idea was the same…creating a sweeper that has best visibility, with performance matched elevator system, long lasting dirt shoes, and with one of the biggest hoppers in the industry. The idea worked and you will find many municipalities utilizing our street sweepers including major metropolitan cities such as New York City. Of course with technological advancements came changes and upgrades. Disk brakes, powerful Cummins Engine, higher highway speeds (65mph) and Alternative Fuel options are just few innovative option available today.

ALTERNATIVE FUEL – Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
Compressed natural gas, or CNG, is natural gas under pressure which remains clear, odorless and non-corrosive. Although vehicles can use natural gas as either a liquid or a gas, most vehicles use the gaseous form compressed to pressures above 3,100 pounds per square inch. It is produced both worldwide and domestically at relatively low cost and is cleaner burning than gasoline or diesel fuel. Natural gas vehicles show an average reduction in ozone-forming emissions of 80 percent compared to gasoline vehicles.

Naturally many of you find the CNG quite an attractive alternative. It is environmentally cleaner and less expensive….so what’s the hold up? Designing a street sweeper that can operate on compressed natural gas can be very challenging. We must consider wheelbase and turning radius. Installing CNG tanks usually takes up lots of room increasing that wheelbase thus increasing the turning radius. For any street sweeper to be effective it must turn on a dime and it must fit on most streets! To complicate the matter, cab-over chassis are hard to find and are very expensive, forcing most of you to look at conventional trucks, adding more inches to that wheelbase. In addition most sweeper manufacturers utilize an auxiliary engine required to power the sweeping package, which must be compatible with CNG fuel…again adding those inches.

This is where we come in! The Global M4 CNG offers many enhanced features not found on most CNG sweepers. Due to our purpose built chassis design we extend our existing frame just 26 inches without changing our wheelbase.

Our standard Global M4 has a turning radius of 18”6” and our CNG Upgrade doesn’t change a thing! The M4 CNG is the most maneuverable sweeper in the market helping you get in to tight corners and cul de sacs.

The 8.9-liter ISL G uses Stoichiometric cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (SEGR) combustion, leveraging Cummins proven EGR technology to create a high performance natural gas engine. The use of cooled EGR (in place of large amounts of excess air used in lean-burn technology) lowers combustion temperatures and knock tendency. SEGR combustion also improves power density and fuel economy versus lean-burn and diesel engines.

AND THE BEST PART – MAINTENANCE FREE AFTER TREATMENT!

The ISL G does not require active after treatment such as a Diesel Particulate Filter(DPF) or Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

Our Global Street Sweepers offer exceptional visibility, incredible turning radius, low center of gravity, and single engine design provides greater stability, safety and lower maintenance costs compared to other chassis type mechanical street sweepers.

All of these advantages are available in traditional diesel, CNG or with diesel electric hybrid technology, a technology that can provide you with up to a 50 percent fuel savings over your current diesel powered sweepers.
