Sweeper Graphics Do’s, Don’ts

Sweeper graphics are a great way to advertise a business or create an identity for your business. The sides of the sweeper can be a moving billboard so why not take advantage of the space. Here are some helpful ideas on steps you can take to determine what kind of graphics to place on your sweeper and how to select a vendor to design and apply:

– Use an experienced and certified vehicle graphics designer to create the original version of the image and text
– Have an experienced vehicle graphics professional measure the vehicle.
– Request references and the design company’s portfolio. Just because a local sign company can make signs doesn’t necessarily mean it can produce vehicle wraps, lettering, etc..
– Understand the value-added resources available from a supplier.
– Prepare an image that works appropriately with the vehicle. The designer should be able to help with this.
– Allow several employees and even customers to evaluate the proof prior to application to be sure there are no mistakes.

Mistakes with vehicle graphics can be costly. From the time and money to fix a mistake, to even how a company is perceived. Make sure you’re communicating the message you wish to communicate.
Here are some helpful tips on what not to do in determining graphics to place on your sweeper:

– Don’t base a decision just on price. There is no “one size fits all” pricing in this industry.
– Don’t work with a company that doesn’t understand your sweeper’s function. It’s critical that your supplier understands what your business is all about and how you wish to be viewed.
– Don’t choose a company that doesn’t invest the time and energy to know exactly what you expect of your brand campaign over the life of the graphic.
– Do your research. Again, don’t just shop price.
– Specify the time the graphic is expected to last. Most vehicle graphics are specified for one, three, five, or seven years. Many applications for fleet design are usually for the length of a lease, loan, etc.,
– Never put too much info or clutter within the graphic. If the graphics are too ‘busy,’ you have communicated nothing other than chaos and lack of direction. Many companies think if they include everything they do they are educating potential customers. The opposite is true…
– Don’t allow anything to be produced without first seeing a proof. Requiring a proof demonstrates what the final product, will ultimately look like.
– Never use dark image colors on dark vehicle colors. Most marketing design needs vibrant colors with vivid contrasts.

Quality graphics are only as good as the quality of the installation. Communicate your expectations and hold your provider accountable, instead of settling for what they want to provide. Utilize your provider’s resources for design, engineering, manufacture, distribution, and maintenance. Otherwise, you’ll spend an inordinate amount of time, energy, and money to get what you want.
Keep in mind that some states restrict vehicle markings, so review DOT restrictions before proceeding with any sweeper graphics.
